King County Household Hazardous Waste
Situation
King County first hired Triangle Associates in 1995 to educate teachers and new students about the importance of reducing the amount of hazardous products they use, properly disposing of the products they use, and safer alternatives to household hazardous products. Now on its fourth 3-year contract with the County, Triangle staff continue to develop programs and support materials that reach targeted audiences at a time when they are most likely to change their behavior--students who are just learning new habits and parents of young children, concerned about health and safety.
Process
Using an interactive training program and materials targeted to a variety of teaching and learning styles, Triangle developed classroom lessons and trained hundreds of teachers throughout King County who now incorporate this information into their curriculum. Our staff has provided teachers with project support that has enabled classrooms to encourage pesticide-free school grounds, stencil storm drains, and educate the larger community on how their choice of home, garden, and automotive products impact both the local environment and personal health.
Results
In addition, parents surveyed after Triangle presentations have noted that they now use safer alternative cleaning products and have moved hazardous materials into locked cabinets. Samples of teacher projects can be found at
